Internship Overview:

The GlyGen Team at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences is excited to offer an in-person paid summer internship for enthusiastic and driven undergraduate and graduate applicants. This 8-week internship program is tailored to provide a comprehensive experience in bioinformatics and biology applications in biomedical research through Common Fund Data Ecosystem (CFDE) and GlyGen tools and data. Interns will have the opportunity to expand their understanding of biology, biochemistry, and bioinformatics concepts including exploration and analysis of glycans, proteins, and biomarkers while working on tasks to find answers to biological questions. This program is designed for 4 ambitious individuals eager to gain hands-on exposure to bioinformatics and biology while simultaneously nurturing valuable soft skills. Interns will collaborate with GlyGen and CFDE teams from both GW and University of Georgia (UGA) to work on projects and tasks, all under the expert guidance of our Internship Director. This internship provides a valuable opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical research and develop essential skills in both bioinformatics and biology.

Bioinformatics Projects

  1. Use GlyGen data with the CFDE WorkFlow Playbook – Explore Workflow Playbook portal for various omics workflows. Answer biological questions using the GlyGen and other resources data. Integrate new data in GlyGen and CFDE, and develop new features and tools for Workflow Playbook Project using webservices and APIs .
  2. Develop a pipeline for data generators to submit data – During initial training interns will learn about glycan, protein and biomarker data, how the data is harmonized, what are the relevant fields in a dataset etc. Based on this information, the interns will develop a pipeline enabling the researchers and data submitters to share data with the resources using correct formats, standards and ontologies.
  3. Machine Learning (ML) ready dataset – From the current integrated datasets, create a ML ready dataset that can be used to train the ML models for glycoscience data. Publish the ML ready dataset and ML models for the wide scientific community to use.

Data Wrangling Projects

  1. Create Machine Learning (ML) ready dataset from high-impact publication – Explore glycoproteomics publications in PubMed to create a new dataset that can be used by ML algorithms.
  2. Develop a training module for GlyGen/CFDE data – Interns would be exploring the GlyGen and CFDE resources, data, and tools hands-on. Based on their training , the interns will be developing theme-based training modules like short exercises, short courses for the community of users.
  3. Training material on GlyGen/CFDE data/tools - In this project the interns will be tasked to create general tutorials, short informative videos, documentation about the GlyGen and CFDE resources, data, and tools that can be used to train novice scientists and researchers in using GlyGen and CFDE.
