The Common Fund Data Ecosystem (CFDE) - GlyGen Summer Internship 2024 at The George Washington University offered a unique opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to gain hands-on experience in the exciting field of bioinformatics and glycobiolgy. This in-person, paid internship ran from June 3 to July 26, 2024, providing five interns with the chance to work closely with experts on projects that involved the exploration and analysis of glycans, proteins, and biomarkers. Interns engaged in both bioinformatics programming and data wrangling, contributing to cutting-edge biomedical research while developing essential skills. With a focus on collaborative learning, participants worked alongside teams from GlyGen and CFDE, enhancing their understanding of biological concepts and gaining practical experience in data integration and machine learning applications. This internship not only fostered professional growth but also empowered interns to make significant contributions to the scientific community.

What I liked best about being a GlyGen intern was learning an entirely new aspect of biology that I had never been exposed to before. Glycans play such a crucial role in many biological processes and this internship allowed me to gain valuable knowledge and education in this vital field.

My favorite part of the internship was the initial boot camp where we had access to some of the world's best glyco-scientists in a small classroom setting. As well as exploring the playbook workflow builder and using it to create new workflows to answer scientific questions.
 
 
 


The main objectives of this internship were to give hands-on experience in bioinformatics by working with glycan, protein, and biomarker-related tools and data, as well as to build advanced expertise in critical areas such as machine learning, data curation, and data standards. Interns were urged to improve their soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving ability, in order to succeed in a professional atmosphere.


Furthermore, the internship aimed to promote professional networking by establishing useful links with principle investigators and industry specialists, thereby facilitating future cooperation. Participants were given a certificate of accomplishment and a recommendation letter to help them achieve their academic and professional goals. Finally, interns were able to build leadership abilities by organising and delivering a workshop, which promoted community participation and outreach.
